For their second project utilizing CyBe technology, Iconic Construction is delivering New Zealand’s first 3D printed show home.
The challenge
Iconic Construction worked together with one of CyBe’s oldest partners, QOROX, to print the 36 wall elements of the show home (within just 22 hours of active printing time!). While these two companies are familiar with the technique, which is ready to elevate the construction industry to a new level, current practitioners in the industry need time to adjust to this new way of building. Traditional construction timelines, such as the standard period between subcontractors’ visits, are generally slower than those of 3D printing. Additionally, industry professionals do not yet fully understand the technique, as shown in one instance where a tile layer wanted to waterproof the walls – something unnecessary for 3D printed elements.
The design
Designed by the Waikato-based designers at The Architecture People, the building offers 167 square meters of living space. Featuring two bedrooms, a separate toilet and bathroom, and a single-car garage, the home represents a typical New Zealand home. What’s less typical, however, is that the home has been constructed using 3D printing technology. Marking the country’s first show home of its kind, Iconic Construction is setting a new standard for the industry and demonstrating innovative ways of providing high-quality living at a reasonable price.
The takeaways
While the construction industry still has much to learn about 3D printing, the technique already demonstrates undeniable potential in terms of speed, cost, and sustainability. Once industry professionals become more familiar with this method of building, the technology promises to deliver even shorter construction times and lower costs. With this in mind, Iconic Construction already has new projects on the horizon. Together with partner QOROX, they are pushing and advocating for the technique, ensuring that 3D printing will make its revolutionary mark on New Zealand’s construction landscape.
The CyBe RC
The Toilet Pods were printed with our CyBe RC (Robot Crawler). This mobile 3D printer, leveraging its caterpillar tracks, can transport to virtually any location in any terrain. This way, it can be used for efficient on-site and off-site printing by easily moving your printer around your print site. With its superior print speed and performance, high-quality print strength and adhesion, and exceptional range, the CyBe RC is among the most efficient 3D concrete printers in the world.
