80 SQM SINGLE BEDROOM HOUSE PRINTED IN ONLY ONE WEEK
PROJECT: 3D STUDIO 2030
LOCATION: SAUDI ARABIA
CLIENT: CCC FOR THE MINISTRY OF HOUSING
OUR JOB: ENGINEERING, CONSTRUCTION, CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION
DELIVERED: SUMMER 2018
DURATION: 48 ELEMENTS 1 WEEK
On request of CCC for the Ministry of Housing we have been awarded to design, engineer and build an 80 sqm single bedroom house in the Saudi desert. This 80 sqm single bedroom house consists of 48 elements – 27 walls and 21 parapets – which were printed on-site in the Saudi desert within only one week. This house will be the first of many since the Saudi government has set the ambitious goal 2030 to realize 1.5 million houses by innovative technologies like 3D concrete printing and fast-brick robotics.
While printing, facilities as windows, doors and electricity sockets were placed. Furthermore, we have educated local operators on how to safely operate the 3D concrete printer. The local print operators will soon start printing the next phase of this huge project to contribute a significant part of the goal of 1.5 million houses by 2030.

3D Printed Homes set to become mass production solutions, thanks to a world-first project with CCC testing the technology in mainstream construction
Consolidated Contractors Company has partnered with technology company CyBe in Saudi Arabia to complete a mainstream 3D Printed House Prototype – the world’s first realistic approach to the real-life mass production of 3D Printed Houses
The 3D Printed House Prototype investigates, for the first time, the potential benefits of 3D Printing in mainstream construction, leading the way to affordable housing around the world and meeting critical housing demands locally and globally
November 12, 2018 – The world’s first realistic approach to the mass production of 3D Printed Houses has been successfully piloted in Saudi Arabia, with the pioneering creation of a unique 3D Printed House Prototype taking 3D printing technology into mainstream construction.
Global construction leaders Consolidated Contractors Company and technology company CyBe were commissioned by the National Housing Company in Saudi Arabia to create the Prototype as part of a vision to transform the housing industry worldwide with innovative technologies – meeting ever-growing, critical housing demands on local and global scales.
The collaborative project is the first step of many in realising 3D Printing as a mainstream construction method and certifying that new approaches, such as load bearing walls and complete MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing) integration while printing – approaches that were explored with this pilot project – are thoroughly investigated and implemented in future phases.
The project is not simply a ‘proof of concept’ regarding 3D printing technology – rather, it examined the realistic adoption of 3D printing technology in mainstream construction. The Prototype took 3D Printing from an ‘abstract future vision’ through to real-life implementation as a mainstream solution.
Consolidated Contractors Company by way of the project were also committed to Saudization – Saudi nationals were trained in the 3D printing approach and associated processes, with the aim for them to be involved in future phases. All finishing material used to complete the project was acquired locally from Saudi suppliers and local industry.
The purpose of the initiative was to build a demo housing unit, demonstrating the capabilities of 3D printing technology, and to investigate its potential benefits to the housing market. The project addressed engineering challenges associated with the 3D printing approach and its integration into the strict requirements of the construction industry.
The project has been a successful incorporation of an innovative approach and its realisation as a realistic process in construction – it is the first realistic collaboration between a global construction company with seven decades of experience, and a technology provider, blending the ‘old’ with the ‘new’ and seeing great success.
The experiences and engineering accomplishments have brought Consolidated Contractors Company closer to the realisation of 3D Printing as a mass production solution with an expeditious turnaround, to meet the ever-growing and critical housing demand on a local and global scale.
