Man made coral reefs

An artificial reef is a man-made underwater structure, that achieves improvements of marine life in areas with a generally featureless bottom.

As a company that specializes in sustainable construction, CyBe Construction is always looking for innovative ways to create positive impacts on the environment. We do this not only by cutting down on negative environmental effects of classical construction, but also we try to actively look for ways to improve our planet. One of our most recent endeavors in this area, in a collaborative project with marine enhancement company Seaboost, is the construction of artificial coral reefs using our 3D concrete printing technology. In this blog post, just like scuba divers dive down to admire the diversity of coral reefs, we will take a deep dive into the subject and explain details of the man made coral reef project.

What is an Artificial Reef?

Artificial reefs are man-made structures that are placed in the ocean to mimic the functions of a natural reef. The practice of placing these concrete, man made coral reefs for the purpose of algae generation dates back as far as the 17th century, when Japan started to use rubble and rocks in order to generate kelp. Nowadays, the function of man made coral reefs goes further than algae generation, as they fulfill most roles that natural coral reefs do. Coral reefs, like the Great Barrier Reef in Australia are vital ecosystems that support a wide range of marine life. They are, however, facing severe threats: the planet has lost fifty percent of its coral reefs since 1950, and an even steeper decline is expected in the future. In order to lend a hand to the natural coral reefs, their artificial equivalents are designed to provide habitat and shelter for marine organisms, just like natural coral reefs do. This way, these man-made structures create new ecosystems where marine life can thrive. They are often placed in areas with a generally featureless bottom, meaning an empty seafloor, as these areas are in the biggest need of improving biodiversity.

The Benefits of Artificial Reef

Artificial reefs are made to mimic the functions of coral reefs, and, therefore, roughly do what coral reefs do. Sometimes called the rainforests of the sea, coral reefs offer some of the world’s most diverse ecosystems. They also offer several benefits to marine life and the surrounding environment. In addition to the artificial reef benefits related to promoting the ocean’s biodiversity, they also protect shorelines from erosion and storm surges by forcing waves to release their energy somewhere other than directly on the coastline, as well as increasing the local fish population, and providing the right environment for algae growth. On top of that, they are capable of blocking ship passage, blocking the use of trawling nets, and even improving surfing! Unfortunately, naturally occurring coral reefs have been declining drastically due to climate change, declining water quality, overfishing, and pollution. This is why man made coral reefs are so important: these underwater structures can offer the same benefits of natural coral reefs, without being threatened as much by these factors.

How Does Our Artificial Reef Design Work?

Man made reefs come in all shapes and sizes. Since the 20th century, many old ships and vessels have been sunk in order to create a substitute for natural reefs. Since this century, companies have started creating more elaborate reefs, purposely designed to have superior materials and support marine life more effectively. At CyBe Construction, we design our own artificial reefs, and use 3D concrete printing technology to create them. Our coral reef designs are based on natural coral structures, which provide the ideal habitat for marine life. We print the structures with a coral reef printer, using a sustainable concrete mix that is made from recycled materials and has a low carbon footprint. The 3D printing process allows us to create different complex shapes and designs, and the different types of reef designs created lead to more habitat diversity and richness of species. We can also customize the size and shape of the coral reef designs to fit the specific needs of different ecosystems. Once the concrete reef is printed, we deploy the man made coral reef in the ocean, where it begins to attract marine organisms and create a new ecosystem.

3D Concrete Printing to Repair the Coral Reefs

In addition to placing new concrete reefs on the ocean floor, CyBe Construction also offers ways to repair existing coral reefs that have been damaged, using our 3D concrete printing  technology. The use of this coral reef printers’ technology is a promising new approach to restoring damaged coral ecosystems, as it allows us to print structures specifically designed for certain damaged coral reefs. In order to repair them, we design and create 3D printed concrete structures that mimic the shape of natural coral. These concrete coral reef designs can then be placed on parts of the reef where the natural coral has been damaged or destroyed. The placed concrete structures provide a stable foundation for new coral to attach to and grow on, so that over time the damaged reefs grow back to be as good as new!

Artificial reef design with 3D Concrete Printing

The use of 3D concrete printing technology offers several benefits over traditional construction methods. First of all, it is much faster and more efficient than traditional construction, allowing us to create complex structures in only a fraction of the time it would take with conventional methods. 3D concrete printing is also more sustainable, as we can use recycled materials while minimizing our waste. Moreover, when using 3D coral reef printers as a production method for differently shaped artificial reefs, every man made coral reef can have different features than the others without the need for different molds. Because of this efficient process using sustainable materials, 3D printed reef structures are produced with relatively low costs and high durability. This makes 3D concrete printing the most sustainable way to create new and repair existing reefs.

Conclusion

In conclusion, artificial reefs have become increasingly important in helping to preserve and restore marine ecosystems. With the use of 3D concrete printing technology, companies like CyBe Construction are able to create custom-designed solutions that mimic natural coral structures and provide habitats for marine organisms to thrive. In addition to producing newly created reefs, 3D printing is a promising new approach to restoring damaged ecosystems by repairing damaged coral reefs. The technology to create and repair reefs offers a more sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional construction methods, as it allows faster construction, using recycled materials, while minimizing waste. With the increasing threats facing the oceans, it is vital to continue exploring innovative ways to protect and preserve our precious marine ecosystems. The construction of artificial reefs using 3D printing technology is just one example of how we can take proactive steps towards creating a more sustainable future. At CyBe Construction, we are proud to be at the forefront of this innovative construction method. We believe that by working together, we can help to create a more sustainable future for our planet and its inhabitants.
